Availability:
Medallion Complimentary Upgrades are subject to availability and may not be available on all flights or in all markets.
Basic Economy (E) fares are not eligible for paid or Medallion Complimentary Upgrades, regardless of Medallion or other elite status.
Complimentary Upgrades are not available for selection by any passenger while onboard the aircraft regardless of Status or fare class.
For Companion Upgrades, both passengers must be ticketed, and upgrades must be requested at least three hours before the scheduled departure of the flight. Except as stated in this section, the rules governing complimentary Medallion Member upgrades also apply to companion upgrades. Upgrades are available for primary ticket holders and their travel companion on paid tickets, Award Tickets, Miles + Cash tickets, Pay with Miles tickets and SkyMiles Companion Certificates.
Ticket Changes:
Changes in reservations on ticketed itineraries are permitted only pursuant to the rules of the original Main Cabin fare purchased. Where permitted, changes may require payment of a change fee and/or any difference in the applicable fare.
Companions who change their itinerary and are no longer traveling with the higher-tiered Medallion Member after the change are not eligible for a Complimentary Upgrade at the higher-tiered Member’s clearance window. If an upgrade was confirmed prior to the itinerary change, a General Member companion’s reservation will be changed to reflect the original class of service for the new itinerary and they will no longer be eligible for a Complimentary Upgrade. If the companion is a Medallion Member, their reservation will be changed to reflect the original class of service, and they will continue to be eligible for an upgrade at their own clearance priority. If the Medallion or partner airline elite member is no longer traveling on their original reservation, the companion traveling on the original reservation will no longer be eligible for complimentary Delta Comfort+ seating, and their Delta Comfort+ seat assignment may be removed.
Mileage Accrual:
Except for eligible Pay with Miles tickets and eligible Award Travel tickets, Complimentary Upgrades are not eligible on fares that do not earn miles. Upgrades do not affect mileage accrual. Mileage earned is based on the original fare purchased.
Fees:
Tickets purchased from Delta over the telephone or at an airport or city ticket office will incur a direct ticketing charge when issued in select European countries. Charges are waived for all other points of origin and may be waived for select European countries upon request. Travel agents may impose an additional service charge for ticketing.
Miscellaneous:
Flight cancellation, substitution of equipment, or other irregular operations may result in the cancellation of confirmed upgrades. Delta's liability, if any, in the event of irregular operations is governed by the terms of its Contract of Carriage and shall be based upon the original fare purchased.
How to Request an Upgrade
Provide your SkyMiles number when making a flight reservation at delta.com, over the phone, at the airport or through a travel agent. Based on what works best for you, you can set your SkyMiles account preferences to have your upgrades requested automatically any time you make a reservation with your SkyMiles number (on eligible flights), or you can manually request them for each flight. Learn more about the two options:
- GET YOUR UPGRADES AUTOMATICALLY
Opt in for automatic upgrades, and when you receive a Complimentary Upgrade, you can use the seat map to select any available1 seat across the entire seat map within your upgraded cabin or in Main Cabin.
Opt in for automatic Complimentary Upgrades if you:- Prefer to maintain top upgrade priority within your Medallion eligibility window
- Enjoy the ease of automation
- Are comfortable self-selecting to an available seat if you get upgraded into a seat you don't prefer
- SELECT YOUR UPGRADES YOURSELF
Opt out of automatic Complimentary Upgrades, and you can use the seat map to select any available1 seat yourself across any cabin when you receive upgrade clearance for that cabin.
Opt out of Complimentary Upgrades if you:- Prefer to choose your upgraded seat
- Will remember to choose your upgrade during your eligibility window
- Don't mind receiving lower priority within your eligibility window in order to choose your preferred seat
Setting Your Preferences:
If you’ve never set upgrade preferences in your SkyMiles profile before, your settings default to being opted in for automatic upgrades to First Class but opted out of automatic upgrades to Delta Comfort+. To adjust your settings:
- Log in at delta.com and visit My Profile
- On the My Profile page, locate Flight Preferences and click ‘OPEN’
- On the Flight Preferences page, locate Medallion Complimentary Upgrade Requests, and use the EDIT button to adjust your preferences
- Note that changes made to your upgrade preferences will reflect on all reservations booked after updating your settings. Already existing itineraries will not be changed.
Keep in mind:
- You can manually request an upgrade while booking a flight on the Passenger Information screen.
- Once you’ve booked a flight, you can go back and request an upgrade by locating your flight in My Trips.
- Medallion Members traveling alone who are not opted in to receive automatic Delta Comfort+ upgrades also have the ability to request a Delta Comfort+ upgrade to any available seat or only a window/aisle seat when checking in for a flight. Once you have selected your seat preference at check-in, your upgrade request will be added to the Airport Standby list. Upgrades will clear based on availability and clearance priority.
- Medallion Members who choose to opt-in to Complimentary Upgrades prior to check-in will still receive top priority within their eligibility window.
- If you have requested an upgrade for multiple cabins, you will be upgraded to the most premium option available.
- If you’re upgraded to Delta Comfort+, you’ll still be on standby for upgrades to the most premium cabin eligible for Complimentary Upgrades on your flight.
- If no upgrades to Delta Comfort+ are available, you’ll be placed on standby for an upgrade. You may view your spot on the standby list in My Trips or in the Fly Delta App upon check-in.
- For flights out of Paris (CDG) and Amsterdam (AMS), Medallion Members will not be able to select an upgrade or change seats within the seat map beginning 48 hours prior to departure.
1When using the seat map, Medallion Members may see upgrades available for purchase within their eligibility window and can choose to purchase the upgrade or wait for their Complimentary Upgrade to clear, if these seats go unsold.
When Complimentary Upgrades Clear
So you’ve requested an upgrade for an upcoming flight – the next step? Wait for your upgrade to clear. When an upgrade “clears” it means that your upgrade has been confirmed. There are many things that determine what order upgrades will clear in and how Members requesting an upgrade on the same flight are prioritized – this is known as the Complimentary Upgrade “clearance hierarchy” or “clearance priority.” Our upgrade clearance priority recognizes the loyalty of our Medallion Members, SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express Card Members and Delta Corporate Travelers*.
*Delta Corporate Travelers eligible for higher upgrade clearance priority are SkyMiles Medallion Members traveling on a ticket that includes their eligible employer's Corporate Ticket Designator.
Here’s what determines the order of upgrade requests:
Priority |
Complimentary Upgrade Hierarchy1 |
---|---|
1 |
Medallion Status |
2 |
Fare Class Groupings: higher-priced fares are ranked above lower-priced fares |
3 |
Delta Reserve Credit Card Members |
4 |
Delta Corporate Travelers* |
5 |
Card Members who earned the Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQD) Waiver in the current calendar year1 |
6 |
Date and time of upgrade request |
*Delta Corporate Travelers eligible for higher upgrade clearance priority are SkyMiles Medallion Members traveling on a ticket that includes their eligible employer's Corporate Ticket Designator.
1This hierarchy only applies to Medallion Complimentary Upgrades on Delta-marketed/Delta-operated flights.
When your upgrade will clear:
- For First Class upgrades, Diamond and Platinum Medallion Members will clear beginning 120 hours (5 days) prior to departure, Gold Medallion Members will clear beginning 72 hours (3 days) prior to departure and Silver Medallion Members will clear beginning 24 hours (1 day) prior to departure, subject to upgrade availability.
- For Delta Comfort+® upgrades, Diamond and Platinum Medallion Members will be upgraded to Delta Comfort+® shortly after ticketing, if available. Gold Medallion Members will clear beginning 72 hours (3 days) prior to departure and Silver Medallion Members will clear beginning 24 hours (1 day) prior to departure, subject to upgrade availability.
- For Delta One U.S. 50 upgrades, Medallion Members will clear on the day of departure following the same clearance priority hierarchy as First Class Upgrades, subject to upgrade availability.
- For all Complimentary Upgrades on Delta-operated flights that are marketed by Air France/KLM or Virgin Atlantic, Medallion Members will clear on the day of departure, subject to upgrade availability.
Things to Know about Upgrade Priority:
- Medallion Tier is the most important factor in upgrade clearance priority, starting with Diamond Medallion Members, then Platinum, Gold and Silver.
- Members at the same Medallion Tier will be cleared in order of fare class groupings for paid tickets, Award Tickets and Pay with Miles2 tickets, with higher fare classes among all ticket types holding higher priority.
- Partner airline elite members will be eligible for day-of-departure upgrades only, with the exception of Aeromexico Club Premier members, whose upgrades can clear in advance or on the day-of-departure.
- Delta Reserve Credit Card Members will have a higher prioritization within their Medallion group for upgrades.3
- Delta Corporate Travelers4 traveling on a Delta corporate ticket for business will now have a higher prioritization within their Medallion group for upgrades.
- If all else is equal, Card Members who earned the MQD Waiver in the current calendar year will enjoy higher priority.1
- Date and time of upgrade request will be used as a tie-breaker.
Upgrades at the gate:
It’s important to remember that Complimentary Upgrades might not always clear in advance when your eligibility window opens, if there are no upgrades available at that time. Even if you don’t clear in advance, you may still clear at the gate. If an upgrade is still not confirmed when you check in, your pending upgrade request will be automatically added to the airport standby list for a potential upgrade at the gate before you board. You may view your spot on the standby list in My Trips, in the Fly Delta App upon check-in, and on the Gate Information Display screens at the airport.
We have improved our policy for clearing upgrades at the gate prior to each flight’s departure to ensure that more Medallion Members are getting the upgrades you deserve. We now start clearing upgrades at the gate ten minutes earlier than we used to, to allow more opportunity to secure an upgraded seat before you board. Plus, through the coordination of our gate agents and flight attendants, if you have already boarded but are the next Medallion Member on the upgrade list when an upgrade becomes available, we will do our very best to upgrade you before takeoff, when possible.
1The MQDs requirement to reach Diamond Medallion Status for 2019 and beyond during the qualification year will be waived if you make $250,000 or more in Eligible Purchases during the calendar year with your Eligible SkyMiles Credit Card. The MQDs requirement to reach Platinum, Gold or Silver Medallion Status during the qualification year will be waived if you make $25,000 or more in Eligible Purchases in that year with your Eligible SkyMiles Credit Card. Upgrade clearance priority for all Medallion Tiers will continue to be based on spending at least $25,000 in the current calendar year on all Delta SkyMiles Credit Cards from American Express that count toward the MQD Waiver regardless of the increase in the Diamond MQD Waiver requirement. Delta SkyMiles Credit Cards from American Express that count toward the MQD Waiver include: Delta SkyMiles Credit Card, Gold Delta SkyMiles Credit Card, Platinum Delta SkyMiles Credit Card, Delta Reserve Credit Card, Delta SkyMiles Business Credit Card, Gold Delta SkyMiles Business Credit Card, Platinum Delta SkyMiles Business Credit Card, Delta Reserve for Business Credit Card from American Express, and Blue Delta SkyMiles Credit Card. The Blue Delta SkyMiles Credit Card is not eligible for the MQD Waiver. However, if you have another Delta SkyMiles Credit Card with the MQD Waiver benefit in addition to your Delta Blue SkyMiles Credit Card, Eligible Purchases made on the Blue Delta SkyMiles Credit Card will continue to count towards the MQD Waiver.
2 All Pay with Miles terms and conditions apply. To review the rules, visit Pay with Miles.
3 Upgrade Priority within the same Medallion Tier and fare class grouping is applicable only to Basic Card Members.
4 To be eligible for the Corporate Upgrade benefit, Corporate Travelers must be SkyMiles Medallion Members and traveling on a ticket that includes their employer’s eligible Corporate Ticket Designator. When certain conditions are met, customers traveling on Corporate Ticket Designators will receive priority over similarly situated customers not traveling on Corporate Ticket Designators when standing by for a Medallion Complimentary Upgrade.
How to Upgrade with Travel Companions
A Medallion Member and one traveling companion may both enjoy a Complimentary Upgrade when traveling on Delta and Delta Connection carriers, as long as that companion is a General SkyMiles Member, Medallion Member, or partner airline elite member*, and traveling on the same flight in the same reservation. Companion upgrades are available for travel on paid tickets, Award Tickets, Miles + Cash tickets, Pay with Miles tickets and Companion Certificates.
Companion upgrades must be requested. If you and your companion are in the same reservation, you can request your companion upgrade at delta.com during the booking process, afterwards in My Trips, or during check-in prior to departure.
*Partner airline elite members are only eligible for Companion Upgrades on paid tickets and Companion Certificates.
Traveling with one companion:
- If you and one companion are in the same reservation, upgrades to domestic Delta One, First Class and Delta Comfort+ work the same way: your upgrades, if available, will clear based on the Status of the higher-tiered Member. This applies to companions who are Medallion Members themselves as well as General Members who do not have Medallion Status and partner airline elite members. For example, if a Diamond Medallion Member and General Member are traveling together, both upgrades will clear at the Diamond window, if available.
- If you and your companion are in different paid ticket reservations that have been linked, upgrades to U.S. 50 domestic Delta One, First Class and Delta Comfort+ work a little differently:
- For domestic Delta One and First Class, your upgrades will clear based on your individual Member Status and confirmation windows, if available. For example, if Platinum and Silver Medallion Members are traveling together, the Platinum Medallion Member will clear at the Platinum window and the Silver Medallion Member will clear at the Silver window. If your companion is a General Member who does not have Medallion Status, their upgrade will clear no sooner than 24 hours prior to departure.
- For Delta Comfort+, General SkyMiles Members are not eligible for Complimentary Upgrades. The Medallion Member will clear for their upgrade at their respective window.
- Linked reservations are reservations that have been booked separately, but have been linked to one another by Delta Reservations. If you would like to request a companion upgrade for a SkyMiles Member that is not already in your reservation, you can call to link your reservations at 1-800-323-2323 in the U.S. or view worldwide phone numbers – be sure to have both confirmation numbers handy. You can also request to link your reservations at the airport.
Traveling with two or more companions:
- If you and two or more companions are in the same reservation, all Members must have Medallion Status or be a partner airline elite member in order for any Members to be eligible for upgrades. Each Member should check in separately and they will clear for their upgrade at their respective clearance priorities.
- If the party is comprised of all Medallion Members and everyone checks in together, then the party will be eligible for upgrades at the lowest tiered Medallion Member's clearance priority.
- If there are any General Members in the reservation, and everyone checks in together, no one in the reservation will be eligible for Complimentary Upgrades.
Delta SkyMiles Credit Card Members with Companion Certificates:
- Both the paid primary passenger and the companion passenger traveling on a SkyMiles Companion Certificate will be eligible for Complimentary Upgrades.
For day-of-departure Delta One U.S. 50 Complimentary Upgrades that begin on flights departing April 1, 2018 and later, companion rules will work exactly the same way as they do for First Class.

*The operating carrier for a flight indicates which airline flies the plane. For example, an Aeromexico-operated flight means the flight will be on Aeromexico aircraft.
** The marketing carrier is determined by the two letter airline code in the flight number. For example, DL2368 is marketed by Delta and AM18 is marketed by Aeromexico.
Upgrade Certificates
Upgrade Certificates are available exclusively for Diamond and Platinum Medallion Members as a part of your Choice Benefits. Upgrade Certificates have a higher priority than Medallion Complimentary Upgrades and may be requested and, subject to availability, cleared when you book your ticket.
- Global Upgrade Certificates, available exclusively for Diamond Medallion Members, offer upgrades on both international and domestic flights with Delta, and select flights with KLM, Air France, Virgin Atlantic, Korean Air and Aeromexico.
- Regional Upgrade Certificates, available for Diamond and Platinum Medallion Members, offer upgrades on the same routes as Medallion Complimentary Upgrades, including all flights with First Class and the domestic Delta One experience.
As a Choice Benefit selection, Diamond Medallion Members may choose any of the following three options:
- Four (4) Global Upgrades
- Eight (8) Regional Upgrades
- Two (2) Global Upgrades and four (4) Regional Upgrades
Platinum Medallion Members may choose four (4) Regional Upgrades
HOW TO USE UPGRADE CERTIFICATES:
Call Delta Reservations - Here's the process to follow:
- Be sure to call at least 3 hours prior to departure or you will not be added to the waitlist. At least 24 hours prior to departure is recommended.
- Be ready to provide your certificate number, which can be found in My Wallet.
- Dial 800-323-2323 in the U.S. View worldwide phone numbers.
- Wait for a Confirmation – your upgrade will be confirmed if one is available. Otherwise, you can request to be added to the upgrade waitlist for your flight.
Please note that you must call Delta Reservations to apply an Upgrade Certificate to a reservation as Airport Customer Service Agents are not able to do so.
GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR UPGRADE CERTIFICATES:
THE CERTIFICATE GUIDE: these guidelines will help you know what to expect.
- Searching for a seat upgrade? Upgrade availability isn’t always better in advance, and the seat map availability does not necessarily match upgrade availability. This means open seats in the seat map are not always eligible for upgrades, although they might still be available for purchase.
- On the waitlist? While it’s possible for upgrade requests on the waitlist to be cleared before you get to the gate, it is more likely that they will be cleared at the gate prior to departure. If your certificate doesn’t clear, it will be automatically reissued to your account. Learn more about waitlisting.
- Wondering about a date or destination? Due to extremely high demand, fewer upgrades are available during peak days and times, such as holiday travel, and in certain markets with very long flight times, including Sydney, Tel Aviv, and Johannesburg.
OTHER THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT UPGRADE CERTIFICATES:
- Finding flights: Upgrade Certificates can be used on any Delta-operated flight, and select partner-operated flights with KLM, Air France, Virgin Atlantic, Korean Air and Aeromexico.
- Traveling together: You can use an Upgrade Certificate for one travel companion on the same flight—whether in the same reservation or a linked reservation— even if you don’t need to use one for yourself.* To link your reservation, you can call Reservations at 1-800-323-2323 in the U.S. or view worldwide phone numbers. You can also make this request at the airport.
- Enjoying Priority: Upgrade Certificates will clear off the waitlist in order of Medallion Tier then the day and time your request was added to the list. If you’re on the Airport Standby List, Upgrade Certificates receive higher priority than Medallion Complimentary Upgrade requests.
- Ticket Eligibility: Upgrade Certificates can be used on most paid tickets, Pay with Miles tickets, and Companion Certificates. They cannot be used on Award Travel or tickets booked in Basic Economy (E). View complete terms.
- Redemption period: Certificates expire a year after they are selected. Certificates must be used on flights flown within the 12-month period – otherwise, the Certificates will expire.
- Flexibility: If you have to change or cancel a reservation where an Upgrade Certificate has already been applied and confirmed, you will not lose the Certificate. You can either call Reservations to apply the Upgrade Certificate to your new flight, or it will automatically be reopened in your account within 2-3 weeks.
*When upgrading on Companion Certificates, two Upgrade Certificates will be required to upgrade as the primary ticket holder and the companion must always travel in the same cabin.

What to Know About Being on the Waitlist
No availability in your preferred cabin when booking your upgrade? Get on the waitlist to ensure your upgrade clears if seats become available. Here is how it works:
- When you call Delta Reservations to use your Upgrade Certificate, if there is currently no upgrade availability for your flight, you may request to be put on a waitlist.
- Remember - open seats in the seat map do not necessarily mean they are available for upgrades (they might still be available for purchase) so keep in mind that seat map availability does not necessarily match upgrade availability.
- If a seat becomes available in the cabin you are waitlisted for, upgrades will clear automatically based on Medallion Status. If multiple Members on the waitlist have the same Medallion Tier, upgrades will clear using the date and time each request was added to the waitlist.
- One Upgrade Certificate can put you on a single waitlist or multiple waitlists – from a specific cabin on a particular flight to multiple cabins on multiple flights. But, your upgrade will only clear off of ONE waitlist and will be based on the FIRST seat that becomes available across all of the waitlists the Certificate is listed on.
- For example, if you are waitlisted on DTW-NRT and also JFK-LAX with one certificate, if a seat becomes available on the DTW-NRT flight you will be upgraded on that flight and you will no longer be waitlisted on the JFK-LAX flight as the certificate has been used.
- Or, if you are waitlisted for both Delta One and Delta Premium Select on your DTW-NRT flight, if a seat in Delta Premium Select becomes available first, you will be upgraded to Delta Premium Select and you will no longer be waitlisted for Delta One as the certificate has been used.
- Once your upgrade clears off the waitlist, your certificate will be considered used.
- If your Upgrade Certificate doesn't clear before check-in, you will be added to the airport standby list. While Upgrade Certificates clear the airport standby list before Complimentary Upgrades, they do follow the same clearance hierarchy.
- If no seats become available before departure, your certificate will be returned to your account for you to use on a later flight.
Waitlist Options:
Use this chart to understand your different options for being added to the waitlist depending on the cabins available and the number of certificates you have. This is meant to be a general guide, and your options may have to adjust if, for example, you’re traveling with a companion, which would require another certificate.

The Certificate owner must contact Delta to use an Upgrade Certificate.
